Target Background

Function
Participates in cysteine desulfurization mediated by NFS2 in chloroplast and NIFS1 in mitochondrion. Activates the cysteine desulfurase activity of NFS2. Cysteine desulfurization mobilizes sulfur from L-cysteine to yield L-alanine and supplies the inorganic sulfur for iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster formation. Glutaredoxins regulate SUFE1 activity by inducing its reduction and deglutathionylation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. contains a conserved cysteine that is sensitive to oxidizing treatments, unraveling a possible redox-control of BolA2 and SufE1 by monothiol glutaredoxins PMID: 24714563
  2. glutaredoxin-BolA interaction occurs in several subcellular compartments and suggest that a redox regulation mechanism, disconnected from their capacity to form iron-sulfur cluster-bridged heterodimers, may be physiologically relevant for BolA2 and SufE1. [SufE1] PMID: 24203231
  3. SufE3 is the NadA enzyme of A. thaliana, involved in a critical step during NAD biosynthesis PMID: 17452319
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast stroma. Mitochondrion.
Protein Families
SufE family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, leaves, stems and flowers.
