Target Background

Function
Transports phosphatidylserine from the outer to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane, thereby maintaining the enrichment of this phospholipid in the inner leaflet. Ectopic exposure of phosphatidylserine on the cell surface may result in removal of living cells by neighboring phagocytes. Regulation of the phosphatidylserine distribution in plasma membranes is likely to help in the maintenance and control of the membrane surface charge. Plays a role in the formation of the tubular membrane structure and in membrane trafficking and is specifically involved in the recycling and degradation of endocytic cargo, likely with its chaperone protein chat-1.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Disruption of phosphatidylserine asymmetry by tat-1 mutation leads to redistribution of positively charged biosensors from plasma membranes to endomembranes. PMID: 23427264
  2. TAT-1 is differentially spliced during development and that TAT-1C-specific splicing occurs in the intestine where NUM-1A is known to function. PMID: 21917090
  3. CHAT-1 and TAT-1 maintain membrane phosphatidylserine asymmetry, thus promoting membrane tubulation and regulating endocytic sorting and recycling. PMID: 21170358
  4. Apoptosis, triggered by cell surface phosphatidylserine exposure, requires a functional TAT1 protein. PMID: 17540571
  5. study reports that TAT-1 is critical for maintaining cell surface asymmetry of phosphatidylserine (PS); tat-1 appears to function in preventing appearance of PS in the outer leaflet of plasma membrane PMID: 18436785
  6. TAT-1 is required at multiple steps of the endolysosomal pathway, at least in part by ensuring proper trafficking of cell-specific effector proteins PMID: 18939953
