Target Background

Function
Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. The gamma chain is found at microtubule organizing centers (MTOC) such as the spindle poles or the centrosome, suggesting that it is involved in the minus-end nucleation of microtubule assembly. Required for oocyte activation and consequently for organization of the female meiotic spindle. Essential for centrosome organization and assembly of biastral mitotic spindles in embryos. Plays a role in stabilizing the augmin complex on the meiotic spindle.
Gene References into Functions
  1. conclusive demonstration of a role for gammaTub37C in both the formation of the anastral meiosis I spindle and in the proper attachment of kinetochore microtubules PMID: 21852952
  2. constantly detected at the centrosome and absent in the mitotic spindle PMID: 11713868
  3. Results show that that several MTs originate from acentriolar microtubule-organizing centers (aMTOCs) that contain gamma-tubulin and require Centrosomin (Cnn) for normal architecture and function. PMID: 19369414
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, microtubule organizing center, centrosome. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, spindle. Note=Embryonic mitotic spindle, female meiotic spindle.
Protein Families
Tubulin family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in nurse cells and oocytes of developing egg chambers.
