Target Background

Function
GTPase involved in protein precursor import into chloroplasts. Seems to recognize chloroplast-destined precursor proteins and regulate their presentation to the translocation channel through GTP hydrolysis. Probably specialized in the import of nuclear encoded non-photosynthetic preproteins from the cytoplasm to the chloroplast.
Gene References into Functions
  1. atToc132 can serve as a receptor by directly binding to chloroplast preproteins but also proposes the existence of subsets of preproteins with different but overlapping affinities for more than one member of the Toc159 receptor family. PMID: 24736607
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast outer membrane; Single-pass membrane protein. Cytoplasm.
Protein Families
TRAFAC class TrmE-Era-EngA-EngB-Septin-like GTPase superfamily, AIG1/Toc34/Toc159-like paraseptin GTPase family, TOC159 subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in seedlings, leaves, flowers, and roots.
