Target Background

Function
Involved in thiamine salvage by hydrolyzing the thiamine breakdown product 4-amino-5-aminomethyl-2-methylpyrimidine (amino-HMP) to 4-amino-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methylpyrimidine (HMP). Has a high formylamino-HMP amidohydrolase activity. No activity with other thiamine degradation products such as thiamine mono- or diphosphate, oxothiamine, oxythiamine, thiamine disulfide, desthiothiamine or thiochrome as substrates. Does not display thiaminase II activity, as it is unable to hydrolyze thiamine. Is able to carry out two successive steps in the salvage of thiamine breakdown product, whereas two separate enzymes are required in Bacillus species. May also serve a damage pre-emption function by hydrolyzing products that would otherwise do harm.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Ablating At3g16990 in the wild-type increased sensitivity to paraquat-induced oxidative stress; HMP overcame this increased sensitivity. PMID: 25014715
  2. The final solution of the structure of At3g16990 contains density that cannot be assigned to any amino acid or crystallization solution component. PMID: 15326608
Protein Families
Thiaminase-2 family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots and shoots.
