Target Background

Function

Involved in protein precursor import into chloroplasts. May be part of an intermediate translocation complex acting as a protein-conducting channel at the inner envelope. Seems to be specific for photosynthesis-related pre-proteins. Partially redundant with TIC20-IV, but not with TIC20-II or TIC20-V.

Gene References into Functions

atTic20 functions similarly to other small alpha-helical integral membrane proteins, such as Tim23, that are involved in protein transport across membranes. PMID: 25551276
Tic20 protein is much less abundant than Tic110 in envelope membranes. Tic20 forms high molecular weight complexes separately from Tic110. PMID: 21961525
The inner envelope localized Tic20 proteins expose their C-termini to the chloroplast stroma. PMID: 21874592
The tic20-I mutants exhibit albinism and severe defects in chloroplast biogenesis. PMID: 21395885
