Target Background

Function
Required for patterning ventral tissues of the tail. May increase bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) activity at the end of gastrulation by proteolytic cleavage of chordin and release of BMP from inactive complexes.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Acts specifically in the ventral tail bud during a approximately 4 h period extending from the completion of gastrulation to early somitogenesis stages to regulate bone morphogenetic protein signaling. PMID: 16530746
  2. bmp1 and mfn (tll1) gene products functionally overlap and are together responsible for a key portion of the chordin processing activity necessary to formation of the zebrafish dorsoventral axis. PMID: 16824737
Protein Families
Peptidase M12A family
Tissue Specificity
During gastrulation, accumulates around the closing blastopore with greater expression ventrally. At the animal pole, expressed in the ectoderm flanking the anterior neural plate. At the 10-somite stage, expressed in the developing tailbud and cranial neu
