Target Background

Function
Part of the Tol-Pal system, which plays a role in outer membrane invagination during cell division and is important for maintaining outer membrane integrity. TolB occupies a key intermediary position in the Tol-Pal system because it communicates directly with both membrane-embedded components, Pal in the outer membrane and TolA in the inner membrane. The Tol-Pal system is also required for polar localization of chemoreceptors clusters. The system also appears to be required for the activity of several outer membrane-localized enzymes with cell wall remodeling activity. Is involved in the uptake of some colicins A.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Colicin N and M13 phage protein G3p compete with TolB for a binding site on TolA. PMID: 25536997
  2. The N-terminal 107 residues of ColA (TA1-107) bound to TolB to show that the TolB box of ColA consists of a 12-residue domain that binds to the beta-propeller canyon of TolB. PMID: 19627502
  3. the TolB box sequence in ColE9 is actually larger than the pentapeptide and extends from residues 34 to 46 PMID: 16166536
  4. Results identify the 16-residue TolB binding epitope in the natively disordered T-domain of the nuclease colicin E9 (ColE9) and present the crystal structure of the complex. PMID: 16894158
  5. analysis of allosteric beta-propeller signalling in TolB and its manipulation by translocating colicins PMID: 19696740
