Target Background

Function
E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase which is a component of the N-end rule pathway. Recognizes and binds to proteins bearing specific N-terminal residues that are destabilizing according to the N-end rule, leading to their ubiquitination and subsequent degradation. In complex with ced-3, required for the ced-3-mediated cleavage and subsequent degradation of the heterochronic protein lin-28 to regulate seam cell fate patterning during larval development. Negatively regulates glutamate metabolism through the aspartate aminotransferase got-1.2. Modulation of glutamate levels most likely controls locomotory behavior, in particular backwards locomotion or 'reversals'.
Gene References into Functions
  1. results raise an intriguing possibility that UBR proteins regulate glutamate metabolism, which is critical for neuronal development and signaling PMID: 29649217
  2. show that CED-3 caspase and the E3 ubiquitin ligase UBR-1 form a complex that couples their in vivo activities, allowing for recognition and rapid degradation of LIN-28 PMID: 28602583
Subcellular Location
Membrane; Single-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
UBR1 family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in pharyngeal muscles, body wall muscles and a subset of neurons throughout postembryonic development. Prominently expressed in premotor interneurons, but not expressed in ventral cord motor neurons. Weakly expressed in hypodermal seam cells.
