Target Background

Function
Required for mitochondrial fusion as well as normal mitochondrial morphology by bridging the essential interaction between FZO1 and MGM1. May coordinate fusion of inner and outer membranes during mitochondrial fusion.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Reconstituted the import and assembly pathway of Ugo1 in protein-free liposomes, mimicking the outer membrane phospholipid composition, and found a direct dependency of Ugo1 biogenesis on phosphatidic acid. PMID: 26347140
  2. Ugo1 is inserted into the MOM by a novel pathway in which Tom70 and Mim1 contribute to the efficiency and selectivity of the process. PMID: 21825074
  3. Fzo1 assembles into homo-dimers, depending on Ugo1 and on GTP binding to Fzo1. PMID: 21385840
  4. PCD2 was identified as a functional (fusion)domain of Ugo1p thata contains at least one additional transmembrane domain that mediates outer membrame targeting and fusion. PMID: 17451553
  5. Findings demonstrate that Ugo1 plays a unique, postmembrane tethering role in mitochondrial fusion. PMID: 19237599
