Target Background

Function
Component of an integrin containing attachment complex, which is required for muscle development and maintenance. Probable structural role in myofilament assembly and/or attachment of the myofilament lattice to the cell membrane. May be an extracellular anchor for integrin receptors in body wall muscles and myoepithelial sheath cells. During the formation of neuromuscular junctions at the larval stage, negatively regulates membrane protrusion from body wall muscles, probably downstream of the integrin complex formed by pat-2 and pat-3. Involved in ovulation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the conserved basement membrane protein UNC-52/Perlecan is required for establishing the correct number of the highly ordered dendritic trees in the somatosensory neuron PVD in Caenorhabditis elegans. PMID: 29678816
  2. UNC-52 serves dual roles in larval development in the maintenance of muscle structure and the regulation of growth factor-like signaling pathways. PMID: 12654300
  3. A perlecan/UNC-52 splice variant is necessary for Fibulin-1D assembly at uterine and mechanosensory neurons attachments. PMID: 16804890
Subcellular Location
Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix, basement membrane. Cytoplasm, myofibril, sarcomere, M line.
Tissue Specificity
Detected on embryonic and adult body wall muscle cells (at protein level). Found in the basement membrane of all contractile tissues (at protein level). Expressed in gonadal sheath cells and spermatheca.
