Target Background

Function
Component of an extracellular matrix cue that guides dorsoventral migrations on the epidermis. Required for the guidance of pioneer axons and migrating cells along the body wall. In particular, it is required for the guidance of axons from neurons, including SubL neurons and AIY interneurons, into the nerve ring. During gonad morphogenesis, involved in distal tip cell (DTC) migration from the dorsal side of the hermaphrodite body to the midbody to allow for formation of gonad arms. Its association with either unc-40 or unc-5 receptors will lead to axon attraction or repulsion, respectively. Involved in dendritic morphogenesis; may act by association with unc-40 at the tips of growing dendrites for interaction with unc-5 on the apposing branch to induce mutual repulsion. Involved in the positioning of ray 1, the most anterior ray sensilium, in the male tail. Required for the formation of synapses between the AVA interneurons and the PHB sensory neurons.
Gene References into Functions
  1. rom these studies we conclude that FMO-1, FMO-4, FMO-5, and EHBP-1 represent new players downstream of UNC-6/Netrin receptors and Rac GTPases that inhibit growth cone filopodial protrusion in repulsive axon guidance PMID: 28859089
  2. LON-2/glypican acts as a modulator of UNC-40/DCC-mediated guidance to fine-tune axonal responses to UNC-6/netrin signals during migration. PMID: 26148345
  3. Ire-1/xbp-1 pathway of the unfolded protein response is crucial for establishing positional information of UNC-6/Netrin. PMID: 25469499
  4. UNC-116/KHC acts in part with the cell and axon migration molecules UNC-6/Netrin and UNC-40/DCC in this process, but in parallel to SAX-3/Robo. PMID: 23475988
  5. This study demonistrated that Netrin (UNC-6) mediates dendritic self-avoidance PMID: 22426253
  6. We found that the guidance cue UNC-6 (Netrin) is required for both axon and dendrite development. PMID: 21186357
  7. Mutants with impaired growth cone functions, such as unc-6, often exhibit abnormal terminations and inappropriate trajectories at the distal ends of the M2 axons. PMID: 12885562
  8. loss-of-function mutations in clr-1 enhance netrin-dependent axon attraction PMID: 15232111
  9. Data show that UNC-6 and UNC-40 function during axon formation to initiate, maintain and orient asymmetric neuronal growth. PMID: 16520734
  10. Genetic analyses indicate that MIG-10/RIAM/lamellipodin, a cytoplasmic adaptor protein, functions downstream of the attractive guidance cue UNC-6/netrin to direct the ventral migration of the AVM and PVM axons in C. elegans. PMID: 16563765
  11. UNC-6 expressed by the VPC and the VNC cooperatively regulates the complex HSN axon guidance. PMID: 17320069
  12. study show that connectivity between two interneurons, AIY and RIA, in Caenorhabditis elegans is orchestrated by a pair of glial cells that express UNC-6 (netrin) PMID: 17916735
  13. Together, these results characterize an invasive membrane domain in vivo, and reveal a role for UNC-6 (netrin) in polarizing this domain towards its basement membrane target. PMID: 19098902
