Target Background

Function
Involved in aging, oxidative stress response, and in the regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis. Inactivation of UTH1 increases life span, leads to higher resistance to heat stress and against hydrogen peroxide, and increases sensitivity to the superoxide radical-generating drug paraquat and to copper. Also required for the selective autophagic degradation of mitochondria (mitophagy) in response to nitrogen starvation. Involved in the remodeling of the cell wall during the various phases of yeast culture development and under various environmental conditions and plays a role in septation. Involved in cell sensitivity to boric acid.
Gene References into Functions
  1. SUN family proteins Sun4p, Uth1p and Sim1p are secreted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and produced dependently on oxygen level. PMID: 24040106
  2. re-evaluation of its mitochondrial localization revealed that Uth1 is a protein of the inner mitochondrial membrane that is targeted by a cleavable N-terminal pre-sequence PMID: 23910823
  3. UTH1 is a yeast aging gene that has been identified on the basis of stress resistance and longer life span of mutants. PMID: 15489196
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion outer membrane; Peripheral membrane protein. Secreted, cell wall. Note=Non-covalently bound to the cell wall (PubMed:11958935).
Protein Families
SUN family
