Target Background

Function
Probably plays a role in ribosome assembly or function; overexpression suppresses cold-sensitive growth of a bipA deletion (Ref.10). May be involved in resolution of branched DNA intermediates that result from template switching in postreplication gaps. Binds DNA at Holliday junctions. May be involved in the correct segregation of nucleoids. Has ATPase activity, binds DNA non-sequence specifically; the presence of DNA does not change the ATPase activity. Mutations in this gene cause an increase in RecA-independent precise excision of transposons and insertion elements, and also reduce bacteriophage Mu growth.
Gene References into Functions
  1. compared the DNA binding activities of three versions of the protein (Uup, UupDeltaCTD and CTD) by an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. CTD is able to bind DNA although less efficiently than intact Uup and UupDeltaCTD (C-terminal domain). PMID: 19948254
  2. ATP hydrolysis at the two ATP-binding cassette domains is strictly coordinated and is essential for the cytosolic ATP-binding cassette (ABC) ATPase function of Uup in vivo. PMID: 16407313
  3. Deletion of the uup gene, which encodes a soluble ATP binding cassette (ABC) ATPase, renders the mutant strain sensitive to its parent when they are grown together in the same medium. PMID: 18848624
