Target Background

Function
Receptor for VEGF or VEGFC. Has a tyrosine-protein kinase activity. Combinations of multiple VEGF receptors are required for development of different blood vessel types in the embryo. Involved in angiogenesis, specifically in VEGF-induced sprouting of new blood vessels. Particularly involved in artery formation. Does not appear to be required for hematopoiesis.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Ca(2+) oscillations depended upon VEGF receptor-2 (Vegfr2) and Vegfr3 in endothelial cells budding from the dorsal aorta (DA) and posterior cardinal vein, respectively. PMID: 26588168
  2. methylation of Lys(1041) promotes the activation of VEGFR-2 and that similar posttranslational modification could also regulate the activity of other receptor tyrosine kinases. PMID: 24300896
  3. Data indicate that the increase in FLT1/sFLT1 protein levels upon miR-10 knockdown inhibited the angiogenic behavior of endothelial cells largely by antagonizing vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 signaling: [miR10] PMID: 22955733
  4. Early Flk1 expression may be induced by cooperative interactions between Gata, Tcf/Lef, Cdx and ER71/Etv2 under the control of Bmp, Wnt and Fgf signaling. PMID: 22071109
  5. Data show that flk1 is not required for proper vasculogenesis and hematopoiesis in zebrafish embryos; however, the disruption of flk1 impairs the formation or function of vessels generated by sprouting angiogenesis PMID: 12194822
  6. ISKNV ORF48R can stimulate expression of flk1; knockdown of FLK-1 results in the disappearance of pericardial edema and dilation at the tail region of zebrafish embryos induced by overexpression of ISKNV ORF48R in early stages of embryonic development. PMID: 18305039
  7. It was propose to rename flk1/kdra gene kdr-like. PMID: 18516225

Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.
Protein Families
Protein kinase superfamily, Tyr protein kinase family, CSF-1/PDGF receptor subfamily
Tissue Specificity
First expressed in embryos between 5- and 7-somites. At 7 somites, expressed in discrete bilateral stripes both anteriorly and posteriorly, and in a transverse ectodermal stripe in the hindbrain. From 7-somites, expression seems to extend caudally from th
