Target Background

Function
Counteracts the innate antiviral activity of APOBEC3G. Forms a complex with host APOBEC3G thus preventing the entry of this lethally hypermutating enzyme into progeny virions. Functions as an adapter molecule, recruiting APOBEC3G to the ubiquitin-proteasome machinery. Targets APOBEC3G for degradation through the assembly with elongin BC complex, CUL5 and RBX1. Binds viral RNA and affects the stability of viral nucleoprotein core. May play a role in viral morphology.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data indicate that SIVmac239 Vif protein efficiently degrades human DNA cytosine deaminase APOBEC3B protein (huA3B). PMID: 26544511
  2. The arginine at position 14 of the SIV Vif is a critical residue for virus restriction by rhA3D, rhA3G and rhA3H. PMID: 24418547
  3. simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) Vif binds to and requires CBF-beta to degrade rhesus macaque APOBEC3G PMID: 22190037
  4. Efficient splicing of SIV vif mRNA is tightly controlled and requires the SA1 site. PMID: 15950999
  5. Results describe a novel vif-sensitive antiviral activity of human cyclophilin A that may limit zoonotic transmission of SIV and the first demonstration of CypA encapsidation into a virus other than human immunodeficiency virus type 1. PMID: 17522232
