Target Background

Function
Serine/threonine-protein kinase which phosphorylates gck-3. Plays a role in osmotic stress responses during which it increases gpdh-1 translation, likely by phosphorylating gck-3. Essential for larval development and the tubular formation of the excretory canals.
Gene References into Functions
  1. WNK-1 functions upstream of GCK-3 in a manner similar to that postulated for its mammalian homologs PMID: 17596296
  2. These results indicate that WNK-1 controls the tubular formation of excretory canals by activating GCK-3, resulting in downregulation of CIC channel activity. PMID: 18049475
Protein Families
Protein kinase superfamily, Ser/Thr protein kinase family, WNK subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in pharynx, nervous system, hypodermis, spermatheca, excretory cell and canal and body wall muscles.
