Target Background

Function
Antagonistic role in the Wnt signaling pathway that operates in embryogenesis. When located at the cortex it has been shown to inhibit Wnt signaling during asymmetric cell division but when relocated to the nucleus it shows positive regulation. Has a role in blastomere signaling during endoderm specification. Component of the beta-catenin-lit-1 complex which promotes phosphorylation, down-regulation and subcellular relocation of pop-1. Within the complex, activates lit-1-dependent kinase activity. Can substitute for bar-1 indicating functional redundancy. Appears to have a role in centrosome positioning and can activation transcription in yeast. Involved in the development of distal tip cells (DTC) by regulating the asymmetric distribution of cye-1 and cki-1 between the daughters of Z1.a and Z4.p cells.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Our data support a model in which WRM-1, which can undergo homotypic interaction, binds LIT-1 and thereby generates a kinase complex in which LIT-1 molecules are situated in a conformation enabling autophosphorylation. PMID: 25548171
  2. model in which Wnt signaling and CDK-1 modify WRM-1 in a temporal and spatial manner to unmask an intrinsic polarity cue required for proper orientation of the endomesoderm cell division axis PMID: 23431196
  3. Study shows that during telophase of an asymmetric division in C. elegans, extrinsic Wnt signaling modulates spindle structures through APR-1/APC, which in turn promotes asymmetrical nuclear localization of WRM-1/beta-catenin and POP-1/TCF. PMID: 21925317
  4. Animals with reduced function of the beta-catenins SYS-1 and WRM-1 have as few as three seam cells. The 'Wnt/beta-catenin asymmetry' pathway is required for the proper stem cell-like asymmetric division of seam cells. PMID: 20849842
  5. WRM-1 downregulates POP-1 by promoting its phosphorylation by the MAP kinase LIT-1 and subsequent nuclear export via a 14-3-3 protein, PAR-5. PMID: 15066285
  6. Wnt signals release cortical WRM-1 from the posterior cortex to generate cortical asymmetry that may control WRM-1 asymmetric nuclear localization by regulating cell polarity PMID: 16077003
  7. asymmetry in C. elegan embryos is driven by Wnt signaling PMID: 16077004
  8. WRM-1 causes all SGP daughters to adopt the proximal fate. PMID: 16890160
