Target Background

Function
Major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporter involved in zinc tolerance by participating in vacuolar sequestration of zinc.
Gene References into Functions
  1. ZIF1 is sufficient to raise the concentration of nicotianamine inside vacuoles, which promotes the vacuolar Zn sequestration. ZIF1 overexpressors exhibit reduced cell-to-cell mobility of Fe in leaves and constitutive symptoms of Fe deficiency. PMID: 22374397
Subcellular Location
Vacuole membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Major facilitator superfamily
Tissue Specificity
Strongly expressed in developing leaves, differentiating zones of root tips and sepals of developing flowers. Restricted to vascular tissues in older leaves, mature roots, flowers, anthers and filaments. Not expressed in developing anthers.
