Promotes spermatogenesis and ovulation by stimulating the testes and ovaries to synthesize steroids. The LH alpha 3/LH beta 3 heterodimer was shown to have potent renotropic and weak gonadotropic activity.

This study indicates that endogenous opiates play a crucial role in the mechanism inhibiting GnRH/LH axis activity in lactating sheep and that the ligands for mu opioid receptor may have the highest inhibitory effect. PMID: 23953813
Data suggest dietary components (phytoestrogens here) down-regulate basal secretion/total production of follicle stimulating hormone (CGA+FSHB) yet up-regulate gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist-induced LH (CGA+LHB) secretion in gonadotrophs. PMID: 24050980
