Target Background

Function
Receptor for ATP that acts as a ligand-gated cation channel. Plays a role in sensory perception. Required for normal perception of pain. Required for normal taste perception.
Gene References into Functions
  1. This study demonstrated that the P2X3-immunoreactive nerve endings in the rat tracheal mucosa have unique morphological characteristics, and these endings may be rapidly adapting receptors and/or irritant receptors that are activated by mucosal irritant stimuli. PMID: 29124772
  2. Data suggest that the negative inhibition of P2X3R activity by the BNP/NPR-A pathway results in a decreased P2X3R-mediated excitability of trigeminal neurons in wildetype cultures. In familial hemiplegic migraine type-1 model cultures, however, lack of efficient P2X3Rs downregulation contributes to the neuronal hyperexcitability phenotype. PMID: 27346147
  3. P2X3 receptors on mouse trigeminal ganglion neurons are subjected to contrasting modulation by inhibitory brain natriuretic peptide and facilitatory calcitonin gene-related peptide that both operate via complex intracellular signaling. PMID: 27175010
  4. mouse trigeminal neurons endogenous BNP acts on NPR-A receptors to determine constitutive depression of P2X3 receptor function. Tonic inhibition of P2X3 receptor activity by BNP/NPR-A/PKG pathways occurs via two distinct mechanisms: P2X3 serine phosphorylation and receptor redistribution to non-raft membrane compartments PMID: 26576636
  5. may be involved in skeletal pain due to high bone turnover PMID: 26340235
  6. This study observed maltodextrin and fat preference deficits in "taste-blind" P2X2/P2X3 knockout mice. PMID: 24833134
  7. P2X(3)R overexpression may underlie ectopic mechanical allodynia in the whisker pad skin PMID: 22981884
  8. up-regulation of P2X3 receptors probably is already maximal and is apparently contributed by basal CGRP and BDNF levels PMID: 23577145
  9. Structure and function of P2RX3 is reviewed, and its role in treatment of pain is discussed. [Review Article] PMID: 22963434
  10. An interaction between P2X3 and membrane-associated ERalpha in primary sensory neurones that may represent a novel mechanism to explain sex differences observed in the clinical presentation of visceral nociceptive syndromes. PMID: 22175770
  11. Transcripts for P2X3 were present in nearly all colon neurons examined. About half of the cells only containing P2X3 transcripts, and zymosan did not change this. The fast current triggered by ATP and alpha,beta-meATP is dependent on P2X3 receptors. PMID: 20861433
  12. CACNA1A mutation conferred a novel molecular phenotype to P2X3 receptors of trigeminal ganglion neurons via CaMKII-dependent activation of calcineurin. PMID: 20735819
  13. chronic esophagitis results in upregulation of P2X(3) and its co-localization with TRPV1 receptor in vagal and spinal afferents. PMID: 19784665
  14. Data suggest that double P2X2/P2X3 purinergic receptor knockout mice are unable to respond to NaCl or the artificial sweetener SC45647 as taste stimuli, mirroring the lack of gustatory nerve responses to these substances. PMID: 19833661
  15. In brief access tests, double P2X2/P2X3 purinergic receptor null mice avoided citric acid and hydrochloric acid at the same concentrations as their wild-type counterparts, indicating that these weak acids activate oropharyngeal chemoreceptors. PMID: 19833662
  16. P2X3-/- DRG neurons lacked rapidly desensitizing response to ATP, and both DRG and nodose neurons from P2X3-null mutant mice no longer responded to alpha,beta-methylene ATP (alphabetameATP). PMID: 11860473
  17. P2X3-mediated responses in dorsal root ganglion neurons were changed in the A/J inbred mouse strain, suggesting that the downregulation of sensory P2X3 might cause low sensitivity to tissue injury pain. PMID: 12028354
  18. P2X(3) receptor expression was studied in mouse embryos from E9.5 to E14.5 using immunohistochemistry PMID: 12351197

  20. P2X3 subunit-containing receptors participate in peristalsis neural pathways in mouse intestine. Subunits localized to sensory neurons. May contribute to detection of distention or intraluminal pressure increases and initiation of reflex contractions. PMID: 12813150
  21. Presence of P2X3 receptor is demonstrated for the first time in mouse otic neurons. PMID: 15081800
  22. Nearly all sensory neurons in dorsal root ganglia, trigeminal ganglia and nodose ganglia in embryos at embryonic day 14 expressed P2X(3) receptors; after birth there was a gradual decline to about 50% of neurons showing positive immunostaining for P2X(3) PMID: 15549366
  23. mice lacking both P2X(2) and P2X(3) receptors have enlarged spleens and that this is correlated with an increase in the number of immune cells PMID: 15804044

  25. These data suggest a role for P2X(3) receptor-mediated purinergic signaling in cochlear synaptic reorganization, and establishment of neurotransmission, which occurs just prior to the onset of hearing function. PMID: 16341871
  26. Despite the deficit in hippocampal long-term depression, P2X3KO mice performed normally in water maze tests of spatial learning, suggesting that long-term depression is not critical for this type of hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. PMID: 17074061
  27. a novel mechanism for enhancing P2X(3) receptor expression and function in trigeminal sensory neurons by CGRP via CREB phosphorylation PMID: 18460469
