Target Background

Function
Metallothioneins have a high content of cysteine residues that bind various heavy metals; these proteins are transcriptionally regulated by both heavy metals and glucocorticoids.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The increased hepatic MT protein in diabetic rats was not associated with the metal levels, but was associated with the oxidative damage. PMID: 28760087
  2. TBI in rats resulted in lower levels of MT1 and MT2; replication of these findings is necessary as is evaluation of the consequences of lower receptor levels. PMID: 28377323
  3. Although, there is induction of metallothionein due to arsenic toxicity, the sequestration of arsenic(III) ions by metallothionein was not observed. Therefore, it can be concluded that the sequestration of arsenic by metallothionein in liver is not the mechanism for providing protection in case of acute arsenic toxicity unlike cadmium and other toxic heavy elements. PMID: 27523482
  4. acute attack of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis was followed by increased expression of metallothioneins in molecular and granular cell layer of hippocampus. PMID: 27173051
  5. An inhibitory effect of melatonin on oxytocin secretion from the rat hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system is mediated through a subtype MT1 membrane receptor and its action is independent of subtype MT2 receptor. However, for the stimulatory effect of pharmacological concentration of the pineal hormone on oxytocin release, probably mechanisms other than membrane MT1/MT2 receptor(s)-dependent are involved. PMID: 26884304
  6. After passing middle age we observe a huge increase in MT3 transcripts in both cortical and hippocampal areas, while the MT1/2 mRNA content increases slightly PMID: 27939232
  7. The recurrent seizures plus normal diet group showed worse performances in neurological reflex tests and reduced latencies to myoclonic seizures induced by penicillin compared with the control, which was concomitant with altered expressions of ZnT-7, MT-1, MT-2, and ZIP7. PMID: 27147436
  8. MT-I/II are required for the conditioning lesion effect and can promote axonal regeneration in the injured central nervous system. PMID: 25947372
  9. These data indicate that maternal zinc deficiency resulted in an elevated incidence of fetal heart malformations, which was associated with significant decreases in placental MT-1 and ZnT-1 mRNA expressions PMID: 24807795
  10. Data suggest magnesium deficiency enhances liver zinc uptake by up-regulating expression of Zip14/Slc39a14 (solute carrier family 39, member 14); increased liver content of zinc leads to up-regulation of expression of metallothioneins (Mt1 and Mt2). PMID: 22571646
  11. endogenous MT-I/II might play an important role in the pathogenesis of pain behaviors, participating in the initiation of inflammatory and neuropathic pain rather than in their maintenance PMID: 23726995
  12. Metallothionein-1 expression is regulated by psychological stress in adult male and female rats. PMID: 23291980
  13. Zinc pre-treatment improved MT-1 and MT-2 gene expressions in kidney which significantly alleviated acute toxicity of depleted uranium. PMID: 22703381
  14. Ischemic preconditioning may protect lung against I/R injury by inducing the expression of metallothionein. PMID: 20945050
  15. The MT mRNA level displays isoform-specific changes: those of MT-1 do not change appreciably, whereas those of MT-2 increases significantly in 2-hr endotoxemia, with or without obstructive jaundice. PMID: 22100509
  16. Metallothionein secreted specifically by astrocytes protects dopaminergic neurons from damage through quinone quenching and/or scavenging of free radicals. PMID: 21264950
  17. CCS knockdown induces Cu accumulation in cells, however, the Cu accumulation is ameliorated by the MT induction, the decrease of Ctr1 expression and the increase of Atp7a expression to maintain Cu homeostasis PMID: 21409224
  18. The data point to a neuroprotective role of MTs and to an important regulatory role of essential metals and hepatic MTs in the pathogenesis of CR-EAE. PMID: 21154237
  19. Expression of MT1 in the adult rat testes and during development PMID: 20109269
  20. In vivo cardiac induction of metallothionein by cadmium pretreatment has a protective effect against cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injuries in an ex vivo model of isolated rat heart. PMID: 19767886
  21. Systemic application of kainic acid (KA) rapidly induced MT-I and II expression in neurons localized in hippocampal formation, piriform cortex, and amygdala of the adult rat, whereas the level of MT-III mRNA was decreased in KA-vulnerable areas PMID: 12692462
  22. Following a focal cortical brain injury, metallothionein was expressed in astrocytes aligned along the injury site. At latter time points, astrocytes, at a distance from the original injury tract, were metallothionein immunoreactive. PMID: 14690533
  23. In LEC rats, Zn may contribute to cytoprotection through the regulation of MT expression which may provide a cellular defence strategy in response to DNA damage. PMID: 15062872

  26. induction is not involved in duodenal Cadmmium accumulation in animals with marginal dietary status of iron, Zinc, and Cadmium. PMID: 15623840
  27. the differences in expression of MT-I and MT-II in different brain regions and cell types (neuron vs. glial cells) suggests that multiple regulatory mechanisms are involved in the control of MT expression following brain injury PMID: 15650329
  28. Metallothionein can protect gastric mucosa against stress-induced ulcers and inhibits formation of stress-induced lipid peroxide. Could have a gastroprotective effect and might be new interventive and therapeutic target in stress-induced gastric ulcers. PMID: 15884113
