Target Background

Function
Required for the cuticle, root suberin and pollen coat development by controlling cutin and maybe wax transport to the extracellular matrix. Involved in developmental plasticity and stress responses. Together with ABCG9 and ABCG14, required for vascular development by regulating lipid/sterol homeostasis. May be a transporter of lignin precursors during tracheary element differentiation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. ABCG9, ABCG11 and ABCG14 are expressed in the vascular system. Mutations are responsible for defects in plant growth and affect vascular patterning. PMID: 24112720
  2. ABCG11 and ABCG12 form a heterodimer. ABCG11 trafficking to the plasma membrane is independent of ABCG12. PMID: 20870961
  3. The dso-4 phenotypes corresponded to the strong DSO/ABCG11 gene expression in the embryo epidermis as well as in the endosperm tissues of the developing seeds. Moreover, the DSO/ABCG11 protein displayed polar localization in the embryo protoderm. PMID: 20035035
  4. results show that WBC11 (At1g17840) functions in secretion of surface waxes, possibly by interacting with CER5; however, unlike ABCG12/CER5, ABCG11/WBC11 is important to the normal process of cutin formation PMID: 17727615
  5. findings show that DESPERADO (AtWBC11), encoding a plasma membrane-localized ATP-binding cassette transporter, is required for cutin transport to the extracellular matrix PMID: 17951461
  6. wax and cutin monomers were both reduced in the atwbc11 mutant. AtWBC11 was widely expressed in aerial organs. Interestingly, we found that the expression was light dependent, and the phytohormone ABA up-regulated AtWBC11 expression PMID: 17989085

Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
ABC transporter superfamily, ABCG family, Eye pigment precursor importer (TC 3.A.1.204) subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in seedlings, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and siliques, mostly in epidermis, trichomes, vasculatures and developing tissues. Follows an uniparental maternal expression in the seed, thus being the product of a maternally expressed imprinted ge
