Target Background

Function
Mediates the transport of sporopollenin precursors (e.g. polyketides) across the tapetum plasma membrane into the anther locule for polymerization on developing microspore walls, thus being required for male fertility and pollen exine formation and patterning prior to tapetum programmed cell death.
Gene References into Functions
  1. ABCG26-exported polyketides traffic from tapetal cells to form the sporopollenin backbone, in coordination with the trafficking of additional constituents, prior to tapetum programmed cell death. PMID: 25415974
  2. AtABCG26, which is required for pollen development in Arabidopsis. An AtABCG26 mutant developed very few pollen grains, resulting in a male-sterile phenotype. PMID: 21696844
  3. Arabidopsis thaliana ABCG26 plays a crucial role in the transfer of sporopollenin lipid precursors from tapetal cells to anther locules, facilitating exine formation on the pollen surface. PMID: 21223384
  4. results suggest that the ABC transporter, WBC27 (AT3G13220) plays important roles in the formation of arabidopsis exine, possibly by translocation of lipidic precursors of sporopollenin from tapetum to developing microspores PMID: 21205178
  5. ABCG26 is required for normal male fertility, exine formation, and pollen maturation. PMID: 20732973
