Target Background

Function
Involved in determining the orientation of cell expansion, probably by playing an important role in cellulose deposition. May act by recruiting cellulose synthesizing complexes to discrete positions on the cell surface.
Gene References into Functions
  1. COBRA's function in maintaining anisotropic expansion may be microtubule-dependent. PMID: 16284708
  2. Mutations within the COBRA gene that result in a loss of function result in abnormal cell growth throughout the entire plant body and the accumulation of massive amounts of stress response chemicals such as anthocyanins and callose. PMID: 16873454
Subcellular Location
Lateral cell membrane; Lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor; Extracellular side. Note=Located on the longitudinal sides of the cell rather than on the apical or basal sides.
Protein Families
COBRA family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, stems, leaves, flowers and siliques. Up-regulated in the root zone of rapid longitudinal expansion.
