Target Background

Function
Casein kinases are operationally defined by their preferential utilization of acidic proteins such as caseins as substrates. The alpha chain contains the catalytic site. The tetrameric holoenzyme CK2, composed of two alpha and two beta subunits, phosphorylates the transcription factor PIF1 after an exposure to light, resulting in a proteasome-dependent degradation of PIF1 and promotion of photomorphogenesis. CK2 phosphorylates translation initiation factors. May participate in the regulation of the initiation of translation. Acts as circadian clock component that maintains the correct period length through phosphorylation of CCA1. May act as an ectokinase that phosphorylates several extracellular proteins.
Gene References into Functions
  1. CK2 activity increases the roots endogenous salicylic acid levels, indicating that CK2 activity is required for SA biosynthesis.CK2 is transcriptionally regulated by salicylic acid. PMID: 24547808
  2. CK2 is required in the maintenance and control of genomic stability and chromatin structure in plants, and that this process affects several functions, including the DNA damage response and DNA repair.[CK2] PMID: 22487192
  3. CK2 activity depletion affects auxin-dependent processes, and particularly auxin transport. PMID: 21435053
  4. The effects of a cka1a2a3 triple mutant on the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) circadian clock, were examined. PMID: 21900482
  5. alpha1 and alpha2 subunits of CK2 individually phosphorylated phytochrome interacting factors weakly in vitro. PMID: 21330376
