Target Background

Function
This protein is involved in the initial step of iron uptake by binding ferrienterobactin (Fe-ENT), an iron chelatin siderophore that allows E.coli to extract iron from the environment. FepA also acts as a receptor for colicins B and D.
Gene References into Functions
  1. A stem-loop within E. coli fepA mRNA coding region activates translation initiation. PMID: 28918899
  2. TonB and FepA display confined mobility within Escherichia coli cell and inner membranes. PMID: 27935943
  3. The authors found numerous specific sites of FepA interaction with TonB on the periplasmic face of the FepA cork in addition to the TonB box. PMID: 28264993
  4. When FepA binds to ferric enterobactin in outer bacterial membrane, it was reflected by conformational motion of the external vestibular loops. PMID: 24981231
  5. analysis of the uptake of ferric enterobactin (FeEnt) by Escherichia coli FepA PMID: 20335169
  6. analysis of the mechanism of transport of ferric enterobactin through FepA PMID: 17056600
  7. TonB was required for colicin-induced exposure of the FepA TonB box, suggesting that TonB binds FepA at a different site prior to interaction with the TonB box. PMID: 17578453
  8. Modification of FepA by fluorescein maleimide was temperature-dependent, and was inhibited by colicin B binding to FepA. PMID: 19432807
