Target Background

Function
Required for the morphogenesis and for the elongation of the flagellar filament by facilitating polymerization of the flagellin monomers at the tip of growing filament. Forms a capping structure, which prevents flagellin subunits (transported through the central channel of the flagellum) from leaking out without polymerization at the distal end.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The solution structure of the FliT chaperone in the free state and in complex with FliD and the flagellar ATPase FliI has been determined. PMID: 27528687
  2. Escherichia coli FliD consists of three domains (D1, D2, and D3) and forms a hexamer plate of the D2 and D3 domains that resembles a six-pointed star with legs consisting of the D1 domain. In contrast, the D2 and D3 domains of Salmonella typhimurium FliD assemble into a pentamer as a five-pointed star plate. Despite their distinct oligomeric states, ecFliD and stFliD engage a common molecular surface for oligomerization. PMID: 28179186

Secreted. Bacterial flagellum.
