Target Background

Function
Thought to have an important role in cilia formation and cilia-mediated chemosensation. Involved in the docking of other MKS/MKSR proteins localized to the transition zone of the cilia.
Gene References into Functions
  1. findings expand the repertoire of MKS module-associated proteins and suggest an MKS-5 and CEP-290-dependent assembly pathway for building a functional ciliary transition zone PMID: 26982032
  2. MKS-5 acts to exclude membrane-associated signalling proteins from the transition zone and limits PIP2 ciliary abundance, creating an optimal, discrete ciliary signalling compartment. PMID: 26392567
  3. these data suggest that NPHP-8/RPGRIP1L plays an important role in cilia formation and cilia-mediated chemosensation in a cell type-specific manner. PMID: 21689635
Subcellular Location
Cell projection, cilium. Note=Localizes to the transition zone.
Protein Families
RPGRIP1 family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed at the transition zone at the base of cilia. Expressed in ciliated sensory neurons, including the amphid neurons in the head.
