Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the opening of the heme ring to form the open-chain tetrapyrrole biliverdin IX with the release of iron and carbon monoxide (CO). Is a key enzyme in the synthesis of the chromophore of the phytochrome family of plant photoreceptors. Essential for photoperiod response and repression of flowering through cytochromes that inhibit flowering by affecting both HD1 and EHD1 flowering pathways.
Gene References into Functions
  1. the activity of l-DES, as well as the enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism, was significantly increased in the OsSE5-overexpression line. PMID: 28474399
  2. Results suggest that SE5 (GenBank accession no. EU781632) may be useful for molecular breeding designed to improve plant tolerance to oxidative stress. PMID: 22829206
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast.
