Target Background

Function
Involved in sesquiterpene (C15) biosynthesis. The major products are beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene. Does not convert geranyl diphosphate (GPP) to any monoterpenes.
Gene References into Functions
  1. MYC2 directly binds to promoter of the sesquiterpene synthase gene TPS21 PMID: 22669881
  2. The florally expressed genes At5g23960 and At5g44630, are responsible for the formation of virtually all sesquiterpenes found in the Arabidopsis floral volatile blend. PMID: 15918888
  3. Data show that the enzyme activity of an herbivore-induced A. lyrata ssp. petraea terpene synthase with high similarity to A. thaliana TPS 21. PMID: 19322583
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm.
Protein Families
Terpene synthase family, Tpsa subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed exclusively in flowers. Expressed in the flower stigmata and also detected in the mesocarp cell layers of the silique wall.
