Target Background

Function
Catalytic subunit of a complex which severs microtubules in an ATP-dependent manner. Microtubule severing may promote rapid reorganization of cellular microtubule arrays. Required specifically for meiotic spindle formation in the female germline; the presence of this protein is inimical to the formation of mitotic spindles. In body wall muscles, regulates organization of myosin thick filaments.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The reconstructions show that katanin cycles between open spiral and closed ring conformations, depending on the ATP occupancy of a gating protomer that tenses or relaxes interprotomer interfaces. PMID: 28783150
  2. mei-1 and aspm-1 promote oocyte meiotic spindle pole assembly PMID: 24554763
  3. The phosphorylation of MEI-1 may ensure temporal activation of the katanin complex during meiosis, whereas CRL3(MEL-26)-mediated degradation of both MEI-1 and its activator PPFR-1 ensure efficient katanin inactivation in the transition to mitosis. PMID: 23918937
  4. MEI-1 is required for translocation of the meiosis I spindle to the oocyte cortex. PMID: 12885567
  5. The BTB-containing protein MEL-26 is a component required for degradation of MEI-1 in vivo; importantly, MEL-26 specifically interacts with CUL-3 and MEI-1 in vivo and in vitro, and displays properties of a substrate-specific adaptor PMID: 13679921
  6. the identification of BTB-domain protein MEL-26 and its genetic target MEI-1 as substrate-specific adaptors for C. elegans CUL-3 PMID: 13679922
  7. MEI-1 is the only essential target for MEL-26, and possibly for the E3 ubiquitin ligase CUL-3, but the upstream ubiquitin ligase activating enzyme RFL-1 has additional essential targets PMID: 19361490
