Target Background

Function
Transcription repressor subunit of the SEU-LUG transcriptional corepressor of the C class floral homeotic gene AGAMOUS during the early stages of floral meristem development. Is part of the A class cadastral complex that define the boundaries between the A and C class homeotic genes expression and function. Interacts together with APETALA2 and SEUSS to repress AGAMOUS expression. Also plays a role in ovule and pollen development. Implicated in embryo and floral development. Involved in post-synthesis cell wall modifications necessary for mucilage extrusion from seeds upon imbibition, probably by promoting the expression of genes required for mucilage maturation. Involved in vegetative leaf morphogenesis at later stages of leaf development by restricting cell expansion during leaf growth. Regulates the maintenance on leaf polarity and meristem activity as well as the initiation of embryonic shoot apical meristem (SAM) development.
Gene References into Functions
  1. LEUNIG (LUG) and SEUSS (SEU) co-repressors repress miR172 expression in the outer whorls of Arabidopsis thaliana flowers. PMID: 21610026
  2. lug mutant seeds but not seu exhibited weak mucilage defects. PMID: 21362134
  3. SEUSS and LEUNIG control blade cell number and vasculature development within the petal and regulate petal polarity along the adaxial/abaxial axis. PMID: 16625397
  4. Functional diversification between LUH and LUG is evidenced by the inability of 35S::LUH overexpression to rescue lug mutants and by the opposite expression trends of LUG and LUH in response to biotic and abiotic stresses PMID: 18390806
Subcellular Location
Nucleus.
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in young flower primordia, later becomes localized to petals, stamens and carpels. Is also expressed in vegetative tissues. Expressed in roots, stems, leaves, seedlings, apex, flowers, flower organs and seeds.
