Target Background

Function
Required for oocyte-to-zygote transition in which it phosphorylates oocyte proteins, including mei-1, oma-1, oma-2, mex-5, and mex-6, modifying their activity and/or stability following meiosis. Functions in both spindle positioning and in the posterior localization of cytoplasmic determinants, including pie-1, pos-1, and pgl-1, in early embryos. Involved in the asymmetric distribution of plk-1 at the 2-cell embryonic stage.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Phosphorylation by MBK-2 facilitates the binding of OMA proteins to TAF-4 and simultaneously inactivates their function in repressing zif-1 translation during the specification of primordial germ cells. PMID: 20826530
  2. MBK-2 functions as a temporal regulator of protein stability, and that coordinate activation of maternal protein degradation is one of the mechanisms that drives the transition from symmetric egg to patterned embryo. PMID: 12967564
  3. mbk-2 is essential in the zygote to ensure the postmeiotic inactivation of MEI-1 possibly via direct phosphorylation regulation PMID: 14634695
  4. MBK-2 down-regulates the katanin-related protein MEI-1 to control spindle positioning and, through yet unknown factors, to control the localization of cytoplasmic determinants. PMID: 14697358
  5. MBK-2 phosphorylates OMA-1 in vitro, primarily at threonine239; phosphorylation at T239 is required both for OMA-1 function in the 1-cell embryo and its degradation after the first mitosis PMID: 16289132
  6. MBK-2 directly phosphorylates MEI-1 and OMA-1 in vitro and that this activity is essential for their degradation in oocytes. PMID: 16338136

Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, cell cortex.
Protein Families
Protein kinase superfamily, CMGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family, MNB/DYRK subfamily
Tissue Specificity
In L1 larvae, expressed widely in the nervous system, including head neurons and the ventral nerve cord. In adult animals, continues to be expressed in the nervous system and is also expressed in body wall muscle.
