Involved in photorespiratory metabolism. Acts probably as a carrier for a glycine decarboxylase (GDC) cofactor or, alternatively, may act as a mitochondrial glycine shuttle. Involved in the transition from the embryonic stage to the juvenile autotrophic stage.
