Target Background

Function
H(+)-stimulated, divalent metal cation uptake system. Involved in manganese and iron uptake. Can also transport cadmium, cobalt, zinc and to a lesser extent nickel and copper. Involved in response to reactive oxygen.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Synthetic peptides corresponding to the sixth transmembrane segment of MntH(Proton-dependent Manganese Transporter) and its two mutations in the functionally important conserved histidine residue were used as a model for structure-function study of MntH. PMID: 20517953
  2. Multiple conserved residues on transmembrane segment 6 of MntH may comprise an important face that is critical for protein PMID: 20441230
  3. Study reveals structural and functional roles for four Nramp-specific transmembrane residues in MntH that may have contributed to the emergence of this family of metal and proton cotransporters. PMID: 15641799
  4. Failure to induce MntH results in a profound growth defect during H2O2 stress, and mutants that cannot import manganese are unable to sequester iron. PMID: 19400769
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
