Target Background

Function
Involved in the synthesis of the type III secretion system (T3SS), also called injectisome, which is used to inject bacterial effector proteins into eukaryotic host cells. Pilot protein that is required for the proper localization of the secretin MxiD/SctC in the outer membrane. Also influences both MxiD/SctC multimerization and stability. Required for both Ipa translocation and tissue culture cell invasion. Binds lipids.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The structure of MxiM28-142, the Shigella pilot protein that is essential for the assembly and membrane association of the Shigella secretin, MxiD, was determined at 1.5 A. PMID: 15775974
  2. The mutually exclusive association of lipids and MxiD with MxiM establishes a framework for understanding the role of a pilot in the outer-membrane insertion and multimerization of the secretin ring. PMID: 18940609
Subcellular Location
Cell outer membrane; Lipid-anchor; Periplasmic side.
