Target Background

Function
Flavoenzyme involved in polyamine back-conversion. Catalyzes the oxidation of the secondary amino group of polyamines, such as spermine and its acetyl derivatives. Substrate preference is thermospermine > norspermine > spermine > N(1)-acetylspermine. No activity detected when putrescine, spermidine or N(1)-acetylspermidine are used as substrates. Plays an important role in the regulation of polyamine intracellular concentration (Probable). Involved in the production of hydrogen peroxide in response to salt and cold stresses.
Gene References into Functions
  1. AtPAO1 is the first plant Polyamine oxidase reported to be involved in a polyamine back-conversion pathway. PMID: 16778015
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm.
Protein Families
Flavin monoamine oxidase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed at very low levels in leaves, stems and inflorescences.
