Target Background

Function

Flavoenzyme involved in polyamine back-conversion. Catalyzes the oxidation of the secondary amino group of polyamines, such as spermine and its acetyl derivatives. Substrate preference is spermine > N(1)-acetylspermine > thermospermine > norspermine. Plays an important role in the regulation of polyamine intracellular concentration. Involved in xylem differentiation by controlling thermospermine homeostasis, and participating in the tightly controlled interplay between auxin and cytokinin that is necessary for proper xylem differentiation. Involved in the production of hydrogen peroxide in response to salt and cold stresses.

Two independent loss-of-function mutants (atpao5-2 and atpao5-3) were found to exhibit constitutively higher thermospermine levels, with associated increased salt tolerance. PMID: 26791972
AtPAO5, being involved in the control of Therm-Spm homeostasis, participates in the tightly controlled interplay between auxin and cytokinins that is necessary for proper xylem differentiation. PMID: 28199662
