Target Background

Function
Orphan receptor that binds DNA as a monomer to hormone response elements (HRE) containing an extended core motif half-site sequence 5'-AAGTCA-3' in which the 5' flanking nucleotides participate in determining receptor specificity. This receptor binds to the consensus sequence [AG][AG]AAGTCAA. Plays a key role in the establishment of non-metameric domains at the anterior and posterior poles of the embryo. It may also play a role in the nervous system. The maternal terminal pathway activates the tll gene in the termini; TLL activity then represses segmentation and activates terminal-specific genes in these domains. Involved in the regulation of early eye development. In the embryonic visual system anlage drives cells to optic lobe as opposed to Bolwig's organ fate.
Gene References into Functions
  1. TLL is a newly-identified component of a combinatorial network of repressor genes that control pair-rule stripe formation in the anterior blastoderm of Drosophila. PMID: 27773632
  2. Knockdown of Atrophin, a Tll co-repressor, also increases aggression, and both proteins physically interact in the PI. tll knockdown-induced aggression is fully suppressed by blocking neuropeptide processing or release from the PI PMID: 24495972
  3. tll regulates the precise timing of the transition from neuroepithelial cells to medulla neuroblasts; tll has a crucial role for the specification of lamina precursor cells PMID: 26111972
  4. Both position and timing of posterior segmentation gene expression domains vary strongly from embryo-to-embryo in tll mutants. PMID: 23333944
  5. drm is activated under the control of tll and triggers development of the small intestine cell-non-autonomously through some extracellular signaling PMID: 22252491
  6. TTK69 is required for early (before the end of stage 4) repression of tll transcription. PMID: 12128207
  7. Tailless-mediated repression of kni expression is impaired in brakeless mutants. PMID: 17503969
  8. Mutations of tll progressively impair cell cycle in MB-Nbs and cause premature loss of MB-Nbs in the early pupal stage. TLL is also expressed in MB-GMCs to prevent apoptosis and promote cell cycling. Ectopic expression of tll leads to brain tumors. PMID: 19084514
