Target Background

Function
Involved in L-cystine import. Low affinity L-cystine transporter that is mainly involved in L-cystine uptake from outside as a nutrient. Is the primary transporter at high concentrations of cystine. Probably functions as a proton symporter (Probable). Can also transport D-cystine, cysteine and homocystine as a methionine precursor. Mediates accumulation of the toxic compounds L-selenaproline (SCA) and L-selenocystine (SeCys). Can also transport S-sulfocysteine and is required for growth on S-sulfocysteine as a sulfur source. Plays the principal role in the 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST)-mediated generation of endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
Gene References into Functions
  1. study identified and characterized an alternative function of the cystine transporter YdjN in E. coli as a transporter of S-sulfocysteine, a sulfur-containing intermediate in the assimilatory cysteine biosynthesis that is used as a sulfur source for the growth of E. coli PMID: 27481704
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Dicarboxylate/amino acid:cation symporter (DAACS) (TC 2.A.23) family
