Target Background

Function
Involved in transvection phenomena (= synapsis-dependent gene expression), where the synaptic pairing of chromosomes carrying genes with which zeste interacts influences the expression of these genes. Zeste binds to DNA and stimulates transcription from a nearby promoter.
Gene References into Functions
  1. This study found that knockdown of zeste (z), a gene encoding a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein implicated in transvection, in salivary gland cells advances the initiation of their degeneration PMID: 26577029
  2. the crystal structure of the DNA binding domain of Zeste in complex with a 19-bp DNA duplex containing the consensus recognition sequence motif. PMID: 26478222
  3. Study provides additional evidence that Zeste protein plays no role in the activation of the white gene transcription; does not rule out that the white gene enhancer is able to recruit RNAPII and function as a weak promoter PMID: 25937222
  4. Polycomb group (PcG) component, Enhancer of Zeste [E(z)], a histone transferase that generates trimethylation at lysine 27 of histone H3, maintains germline identity in Drosophila adult testes PMID: 24675960
  5. Zeste mediates Polycomb repression PMID: 11880343
  6. the Zeste-DNA backbone contacts all map to one face of the DNA PMID: 12354778
  7. interaction of zeste response elements do not block yellow enhancers PMID: 14531075
  8. DNA-binding sites for the Zeste protein within cellular memory modules are necessary for the inheritance of active chromatin through Zeste-dependent recruitment of BRM PMID: 14963490
  9. Zeste is also required for insulator bypass by the eye enhancer. Taken together, these results show that Zeste can support specific long-range interactions between enhancers and promoters. PMID: 19578867
