  • Immunofluorescence staining of HepG2 cells with CSB-PA006007LA01HU at 1:66, counter-stained with DAPI. The cells were fixed in 4% formaldehyde, permeabilized using 0.2% Triton X-100 and blocked in 10% normal Goat Serum. The cells were then incubated with the antibody overnight at 4°C. The secondary antibody was Alexa Fluor 488-congugated AffiniPure Goat Anti-Rabbit IgG(H+L).

Target Background

Function
Contributes to the transparency and refractive index of the lens. In its oxidized form (absence of intramolecular disulfide bond), acts as a chaperone, preventing aggregation of various proteins under a wide range of stress conditions. Required for the correct formation of lens intermediate filaments as part of a complex composed of BFSP1, BFSP2 and CRYAA.
Gene References into Functions
  1. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutation of the alphaA-crystallin gene in rabbits recapitulates phenotypes of congenital cataracts, microphthalmia, obscurity, and early atrophy of the lens, and failed differentiation of lens fibers. PMID: 28475701
Involvement in disease
Cataract 9, multiple types (CTRCT9)
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=Translocates to the nucleus during heat shock and resides in sub-nuclear structures known as SC35 speckles or nuclear splicing speckles.
Protein Families
Small heat shock protein (HSP20) family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in the eye lens (at protein level).
