Target Background

Function
Receptor for glutamate. L-glutamate acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter at many synapses in the central nervous system. The postsynaptic actions of Glu are mediated by a variety of receptors that are named according to their selective agonists.
Gene References into Functions
  1. GRID1 expression is downregulated in both MECP2- and CDKL5-mutated iPS cells and upregulated in neuronal precursors and mature neurons. PMID: 24916645
  2. GRID1 genotype is related to gray matter variation in prefrontal and anterior thalamic brain areas in healthy subjects, but not in schizophrenia patients, indicating a potential role in thalamo-cortical functioning. PMID: 23017809
  3. results strongly support previously reported association studies, implicating GRID1 in the etiology of schizophrenia PMID: 17490860
  4. The results of this study suggested that genetic variants in the GRID1 transcriptional regulatory region may play a role in the etiology of schizophrenia. PMID: 19346103
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell junction, synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
