Target Background

Function
GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain, mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to the GABA/benzodiazepine receptor and opening an integral chloride channel.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Sp4 functionally regulates the transcription of Gabra1 (GABAA alpha1) and Gabra2 (GABAA alpha2), but not Gabra3 (GABAA alpha3) subunit genes. PMID: 26469128
  2. presence of alpha2 and alpha3 subunits during early development might make them more amenable to becoming sensitized by environmental stressors, whereas the relative paucity of alpha1 subunits at this age might limit the sensitization of this subunit. PMID: 22044189
  3. clustering of GABA(A)R alpha2, alpha3, and GlyRs by gephyrin is mediated by distinct mechanisms at mixed glycinergic/GABAergic synapses. PMID: 21880742
  4. Results describe the differential cellular distribution of alpha1, alpha2 and alpha3 GABA(A) receptor subunits in relation to striatopallidal (Str-GP) and pallidopallidal (GP-GP) synapses. PMID: 21219474
  5. Distinct alpha subunit contributions create heterogeneity in developmental acceleration of IPSC decay in neocortex. PMID: 12433958
  6. Developmental trends of subunits alpha1 and alpha3 intersected at P12. Switch in alpha3 and alpha1 during development may mediate different functional properties of GABA transmission. PMID: 14729731
  7. a domain of four amino acids within the subunit mediates the distinct sensitivities to GABA;identified motifs contribute to a structure involved in the transduction of the binding signal rather than to the binding itself PMID: 15199051
  8. These data demonstrate that the modulation of breathing via GABA(A) receptor activation will be determined by the overall balance of negative and positive neurosteroid modulators within respiratory nuclei. PMID: 16690709
  9. Presence of persistent GABA(A)-mediated inhibitory modality in presympathetic paraventricular nucleus neurons, which plays major role in modulating their excitability and firing activity. PMID: 17495040
  10. localized changes in GABA(A)R expression acting at highly specific points in the interconnected thalamocortical network lie at the heart of idiopathic generalized epilepsy PMID: 17630284
  11. Our findings suggest that various combinations of GABA(A) alpha3-, theta- and epsilon-subunits may be assembled at a regional and developmental level in the brain. PMID: 19249336
