Target Background

Function
Transcription repressor. Required for the specification of corticospinal motor neurons and other subcerebral projection neurons. May play a role in layer and neuronal subtype-specific patterning of subcortical projections and axonal fasciculation. Controls the development of dendritic arborization and spines of large layer V pyramidal neurons. Plays a role in rostro-caudal patterning of the diencephalon and in prethalamic formation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Taken together, our results show that Fezf2 is indispensable in differentiation of bipolar precursors into cone OFF bipolar cells and in functional maturation of cone ON bipolar cells during development of mouse retina. PMID: 29559301
  2. findings indicate a wider role for Fezf2 within gene expression networks that underpin the diversity of layer 5 cortical projection neurons. PMID: 26234885
  3. transient expression ofFezf2in the retina modulates the transcription ofBrn3band the survival of RGCs. PMID: 26861874
  4. Study shows that the transcription factor Fezf2 directly regulates various tissue-restricted antigens genes in medullary thymic epithelial cells independently of Aire. Mice lacking Fezf2 in mTECs displayed severe autoimmune symptoms, including the production of autoantibodies and inflammatory cell infiltration targeted to peripheral organs. PMID: 26544942
  5. Satb2 and Fezf2 regulation promotes subcerebral projection neuron identity in the developing cerebral cortex PMID: 26324926
  6. Characterized the activity of regulatory regions around the Fezf2 locus at stages of corticogenesis. Identified a promoter that was sufficient for expression in the cerebral cortex, and enhancers that drove reporter gene expression in forebrain domains. PMID: 24618363
  7. Fezf2 is a selector gene able to regulate the expression of gene sets that collectively define mouse corticospinal motor neurons (CSMN). PMID: 24997765
  8. Ectopic Fezf2 expression is sufficient to redirect the fate of subventricular zone stem cells. PMID: 25002477
  9. Our findings establish a new, distinct physiological identity of Fezf2-expressing neurons within mature motor cortex. PMID: 24647950
  10. These results identify Fezf2 radial glial cells as a multipotent neocortical progenitor and suggest that the existence, and molecular identity, of laminar-fate-restricted RGCs awaits further investigation. PMID: 24314728
  11. findings reveal that SOX transcription factors converge onto a cis-acting element of Fezf2 and form critical components of a regulatory network controlling the identity and connectivity of corticospinal neurons PMID: 22678282
  12. Fezf2 controls the specification of telencephalic progenitors from mouse embryonic stem cell PMID: 21330470
  13. These results identify Fezf1 and Fezf2 as important regulators of olfactory system development and sensory neuron identity. PMID: 21452247
  14. This study demonstrated that fez2 in the neocortex individual populations of projection neurons cell-extrinsically control the laminar fate of interneurons and the assembly of local inhibitory circuitry. PMID: 21338885
  15. the study demonstrated that a specific population of cortical projection neurons can be directed to differentiate outside of the cortex by cell-autonomous signaling. PMID: 20953195
  16. Fezf1 and Fezf2 control differentiation of neural stem cells by repressing Hes5 and, in turn, by derepressing neurogenin 2 in the forebrain. PMID: 20431123
  17. Fezl functions in the formation of subplate neurons and thalamocortical axons. PMID: 15188439
  18. Fezl is required for the birth and specification of corticospinal motor neurons. PMID: 16157277
  19. Putative zinc-finger transcriptional repressor Fezl regulates the specification or differentiation of layer 5 and 6 neurons during mammalian cortical development. PMID: 16284245
  20. Zfp312 plays a critical role in layer- and neuronal subtype-specific patterning of cortical axonal projections PMID: 16314561
  21. These data indicate that Fez and Fezl repress the caudal diencephalon fate in the rostral diencephalon, and ZLI formation probably depends on Fez/Fezl-mediated formation of diencephalon subdivisions. PMID: 16971467
  22. In Fezl-deficient mice, most of the thalamic and cortical axons stop in the internal capsule and at the pallial-subpallial boundary at E14.5. This abnormality is transient, and the thalamic and cortical axons reach their targets at E15.5. PMID: 17503485
  23. The Fezf2-Ctip2 genetic pathway regulates the fate choice of subcortical projection neurons in the developing cerebral cortex. PMID: 18678899
