Target Background

Function
Binds specifically and directly to substrates containing either a simple or bipartite NLS motif. Promotes docking of import substrates to the nuclear envelope. Seems to act as a cytosolic receptor for both simple and bipartite NLS motifs.; It is required for normal cell proliferation and may serve as an adapter molecule to form complexes with other proteins. May act as a tumor suppressor in hematopoietic cells. May play a role in the nuclear import of karyophilic proteins and some of these may be required for the normal transmission and function of proliferative signals in the cells.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Importin-alpha2 is needed for some processes in the development of both the nervous system and the larval musculature PMID: 21151903
  2. Wnt-activated growth of the postsynaptic membrane is mediated by the synapse-to-nucleus translocation and active nuclear import of Fz2-C via a selective Importin-beta11/alpha2 pathway. PMID: 20601947
  3. Imp-alpha 2 protein plays a critical role in Kelch function by regulating its deposition on ring canals during their assembly. PMID: 12435357
  4. each Imp-alpha protein carries during Drosophila spermatogenesis distinct, albeit overlapping, functions that may involve nuclear import of proteins, microtubule organisation, and other yet unknown processes PMID: 12490175
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=Shuttles between the cytoplasm and nucleus in a cell cycle-dependent manner.
Protein Families
Importin alpha family
Tissue Specificity
Predominantly expressed in the neuroblast stem cells.
