Target Background

Function
Prohibitin probably acts as a holdase/unfoldase for the stabilization of newly synthesized mitochondrial proteins. Necessary for mitochondrial and cell metabolism and biogenesis. Required to regulate the ethylene-mediated signaling; involved in growth maintenance in the presence of ethylene. Functions in nitric oxide (NO)-mediated responses and in hydrogen peroxide-induced NO accumulation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Abscisic acid-induced nitric oxide production and stomatal closure are abolished in phb3-3 mutants. PMID: 20068191
  2. AtPHB3 has a role as a positive regulator of expression of a subset of ethylene-regulated genes along with a group of genes required to maintain growth in the presence of ethylene. PMID: 17525078
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane. Mitochondrion inner membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein. Nucleus. Cytoplasm.
Protein Families
Prohibitin family
Tissue Specificity
Mostly expressed in proliferative tissues, including vasculature, shoot and root apical tissues. Expressed in roots, stems, leaves and flowers (at protein level).
