Target Background

Function
Component of the Rcs signaling system, which controls transcription of numerous genes. RcsB is the response regulator that binds to regulatory DNA regions. Can function both in an RcsA-dependent or RcsA-independent manner. The system regulates expression of numerous genes, including genes involved in colanic acid capsule synthesis, biofilm formation, cell division and outer membrane proteins synthesis. Also involved, with GadE, in control of glutamate-dependent acid resistance, and, with BglJ, in derepression of the cryptic bgl operon. The RcsB-BglJ activity is probably independent of RcsB phosphorylation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. BglJ-RcsB activates leuO, while LeuO inhibits activation by BglJ-RcsB. Furthermore, LeuO activates expression of bglJ, which is likewise H-NS repressed. PMID: 27695690
  2. The structure reveals important molecular details of phosphorylation-independent dimerization of RcsB and has implication for the formation of heterodimers. PMID: 27670836
  3. The results of this study significantly broaden the role for RcsB in enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli virulence regulation. PMID: 23985143
  4. BglJ-RcsB is a pleiotropic transcriptional activator that coordinates regulation with global regulators including CRP, LeuO and HNS. PMID: 24335284
  5. Acetylation inhibits RcsB activity and that some of this inhibition acts through the acetylation of Lys-154. PMID: 23852870
  6. RcsB-BglJ binds to the leuO promoter region and activates one of two leuO promoters. PMID: 22295907
  7. RcsB is required for inducible acid resistance and acts at gadE-dependent and -independent promoters. PMID: 21571995
  8. activation of gadA transcription requires a GAD box and binding of an RcsB/GadE heterodimer. PMID: 20189963
  9. RcsB and RcsC inversely regulated the timing of flagellar biogenesis PMID: 16776655
  10. Results show RcsB influences the piliation state by controlling fimB and fimE transcription. PMID: 17644608
