Description

The beta-Spec polyclonal antibody is developed by administering a recombinant Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) beta-Spec protein segment (1-271aa) to a rabbit. Several repeated immunizations trigger an immune response in the rabbit. The rabbit serum is extracted and then undergoes affinity chromatography purification to obtain polyclonal antibodies against beta-Spec. The beta-Spec antibody is suitable for the detection of the Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) beta-Spec protein through ELISA and WB assays.

The beta-Spec protein in Drosophila melanogaster serves as a fundamental component of the cell cytoskeleton, contributing to the maintenance of cell shape, structural integrity, and membrane stability. As part of the spectrin family, beta-Spec plays diverse roles, including facilitating cell adhesion and migration, mediating intracellular transport, and influencing the proper localization of membrane proteins and organelles. In neurons, beta-Spec is crucial for the formation and maintenance of the axon initial segment.

Target Background

Function
Spectrin is the major constituent of the cytoskeletal network underlying the erythrocyte plasma membrane. It associates with band 4.1 and actin to form the cytoskeletal superstructure of the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Interacts with calmodulin in a calcium-dependent manner.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The abnormal stress fiber-like actin structure on the basal side of follicle cells provides a likely link between the b-spectrin mutations and the loss of the Hippo signaling activity phenotype. PMID: 25589787
  2. Model in which alphabeta-spectrin directly couples lipid uptake at the plasma membrane to lipid droplet growth in the cytoplasm. In contrast, strong overexpression of beta-spectrin caused fat body atrophy and larval lethality. PMID: 24037266
  3. Data show that DAnk2-binding is critical for beta spectrin function in vivo. PMID: 20573981
  4. Spectrin may be an active partner in the stabilization of polarized membrane domains PMID: 14734656
  5. Presynaptic spectrin functions as an essential presynaptic scaffold that may link synaptic cell adhesion with the stabilization of the underlying microtubule cytoskeleton. PMID: 15916948
  6. Brush border spectrin is required for early endosome recycling. PMID: 16537648
  7. At the Drosophila neuromuscular junction postsynaptic Spectrin-actin lattice acts as an organizing scaffold upon which pre- and postsynaptic development are arranged. PMID: 17088429
  8. beta-Spectrin is required in neurons for proper midline axon guidance in the embryonic CNS. PMID: 17121810
